In an effort to bring greater attention to the often underestimated realm of wallpaper craftsmanship, the Neues Museum Nürnberg is showcasing exquisite artists' wallpapers from the Goetz Collection in its façade rooms starting in March this year. Since 2024 – and almost a hundred years after its premiere in the animated film “Steamboat Willie” – anyone can now copy and modify the character - because Disney's US copyright has expired after 95 years. And it's not just Mickey Mouse that is more present today than ever before; accessories based on the Snoopy character are also making a small comeback. Perhaps because they bring back fond memories as relics of our childhood?

Last year, the trend colour coral conquered the interior and set extraordinary accents. Accessories, objects and furniture are now also turning to mermaidcore. The underwater landscape has all sorts to offer, from shimmering small and large fish inhabitants to tentacle-like corals and colourful water plants. De Gournay's scenery is reminiscent of the work of Ito Jakuchu, an artist from the middle of the Edo period (1603 to 1868) who is known for his realistic depictions in the so-called "ukiyo-e" style. This painting technique describes the pre-drawing of certain shapes with pigments and the subsequent trickling in of watercolour paint, which spreads gently towards the edges and gives the design an inky, translucent and particularly elegant presence.
